Design of the Study

The first step consisted of establishing a baseline prevalence of STDs and HIV, as well as knowledge, attitudes, and practices of the beneficiaries regarding these epidemics. In order to do that, we performed the “Population Survey of STDs & HIV at the National Level” in 24 cities of Peru with more than 50,000 habitants in each city.

After the survey, 10 pairs of cities were chosen from the 24 cities in the survey. One city was randomly chosen from each pair to work with the combined intervention, and one was chosen as the control city. (Community Trial of Random Intervention).
